West Hollywood, CA July 31, 1994 review

by Mark

Hello All,

Well here is my review of the Milla show from July 31, 1994 at Luna Park in West Hollywood, CA.

I am not a professional reviewer and I am a huge Milla fan, so I may be pleasantly biased. :-)

First the bare bones details:

The show was sold out and apparently they had many requests for tix after the sellout because there were signs up out side that said, "Milla Soldout: Absolutley No Tickets Available" (or some such saying....)

Set List:

The Blue Goat*
Ruby Lane
Charlie
It's Your Life
Strange Behavior (new song #1)
Gentleman Who Fell
Bang Your Head
Precious Time (new song #2)
Clock
The Alien Song
Falling~ (new song #3)
You Did It All Before
--
--
Can You Bend Your Back Like This (new song #4)
In A Glade

* this song was an instrumental played by David and Johan (the two Swedish guys Chris (the keyboard/mandolin player) discovered while cruising around Paris)

~ Milla played acoustic guitar on this track

She came on at about 9:15 and was through with the encore by about 10:45...

She performed everything off of TDC except "Don't Fade Away" which she said they hadn't learned yet...

she was dressed like that review of the san diego show said... she had a silver watch on her left wrist, a bracelet on her right... she had rings on her left hand ring finger and right hand pointing finger... she had an ornate silver cross on a chain around her neck... no earrings that i could see...

Milla was apparently quite "out of it" when she came on. She had difficulty adjusting the mic after the first song and was alternately joyously giggly and intensely serious as she sang and talked...

I found her to be quite mesmerising...she made many gestures and dance-type motions...she really sold each song terrifically...

Her mom was in the audience and milla dedicated "precious time" to her...

Now, on to some personal stuff...

My best friend, who is a huge milla fan as a result of me giving her the cd, cancelled at the last minute. So rather than going alone and trying to sell the ticket there (which I probably could have done easily), I called a friend who is rather pleasantly annoying. He is not a fan at all, but since i had the ticket, he went. He said he was familiar with the song they play on KROQ ("gentleman who fell"), but when it came time for the encore and people were shouting song titles, he yelled, "Gentleman Who Fell!!" Milla said, "Gentleman Who Fell?! Where have you been for the last 45 minutes?!" It was quite funny...I wasn't standing next to him so wasn't affected by his having made a fool of himself...

I waited around to go back and meet her and while doing so talked to the members of the band and some other fans who i had met (most because they saw i had taped the show and asked how it turned out)...

At about 11:10 people started being let back in small groups...i didn't push to the front, so i was one of the last few...

There was a guy from her label who had 8x10 glossies that he gave to some of the people in line and I got one and i had the 5-track promo cd that i wanted her to sign...

My friend had the glossy and was in line in front of me...he concluded his 2 second conversation with milla by saying, "I don't have your cd, but i will get it. This is my friend Mark the real fan." Which milla heard as, "Mark the real fag." This gave her quite a laugh...

I talked to her for what seemed like a long time, but was surely only a minute or two...I hugged her and had her sign my stuff...i told her how much i loved the new songs and asked when i would get to hear them released...She said they would probably record next spring and be released next late summer/fall... I also mentioned the internet and our discussion group...she seemed really pleased to hear about it (although i am sure she already new about it...)

When we walked in to her little room she was just finishing the last toke off a joint which she then tossed on the floor...so i got pot smoke blown on me by milla...very cool.....

She was exceedingly genuinely nice to all her fans that i talked to...she really made me feel welcome...it was quite a wonderful experience...

There was a photographer there taking pictures...so after the show i chatted with him and asked if it was possible to get a print of some... i gave him my number and he just called...he is sending me a print of milla singing and one of her signing my picture with me and my friend standing next to her.....very cool!!! I am sending him $5 and a copy of my tape....

I will include tape info in another post for those who didn't read through this whole thing....

The club was very small and no seating except one row of chairs directly in front of the stage where milla's mom and some other friends were...

The major drawback of the club for me was that they ran out of San Pellegrino..... :-(

The opening act, which played for 45 mins, was Chad Dire. He played acoustic guitar and sang many great songs (one of which I wish i had taped, i liked it so much)...

The keyed-fiddle thing is a beautiful sounding instrument....

Well, i guess that is it....

I hope someone is still reading this....

I had an absolutely wonderful time.....GO SEE MILLA!!!!
